Massmart is working with its suppliers to improve social and environmental practices in factories by implementing an Ethical Sourcing Programme. “Through this programme, we hope to work our way up to creating better and safer working conditions in the factories that supply us with the products we sell,” says Tan Gill, Walmart Senior Director, Ethical Sourcing.

The programme is aimed at verifying suppliers’ compliance with the Standards for Suppliers and improving the working conditions in factories; and as such Massmart will be conducting ethical sourcing audits of its suppliers. Training sessions aimed at preparing suppliers for Massmart’s ethical sourcing audit form an integral part of the programme.

“By investing in training initiatives that focus on preparing our suppliers for the Massmart Ethical Sourcing Programme, we aim to not only improve the working conditions in factories but provide our customers with ethically produced products,” says Cathy Chomse, Massmart Senior Ethical Sourcing Manager.

Ninety-seven participants, including managing directors, factory managers, human resource managers and production managers attended the first training sessions hosted at the Massmart offices in Sunninghill. Training included an overview of the audit process, assessments and consequences, in depth discussion around Walmart’s ethical sourcing standards for suppliers as well as guidelines on suppliers’ obligations.
