New vintage Knorhoek Shiraz 2009 perfect for the Christmas roast

The 2009 harvest of lower yields and intensely concentrated flavours came up trumps for the latest Shiraz produced by Knorhoek, the family owned Stellenbosch wine gem acclaimed for its repertoire of roaring reds.

The elegant Knorhoek Shiraz 2009 was shaped by selected, high-altitude vineyards with two different aspects namely, warmer north facing and cooler south east facing slopes with the grapes hand-picked at optimum ripeness.

“The 2009 vintage was exceptional to say the least and this wine echoes the unique mix of soils, characters and different microclimates of these individual vineyard sites. We experienced the perfect conditions for slow ripening which allowed the grapes to develop their intense flavours and complexity,” shares Knorhoek winemaker Arno Albertyn.

The Shiraz grapes were fermented in open fermenters where the grapes stayed on the skins for an extended period before the wine was aged in 20% new and older French oak barrels for 18 months.

Even in its youth the Knorhoek Shiraz 2009 is luscious and well integrated, showing pure aromas of rich plum and perfumed youngberries uplifted by mixed spices and white pepper. The wine has a smooth entry on the palate, with good structure, length and subtle, fine tannins on the finish which will age well over the next five years.

“Amongst sweat and science lies the magical Knorhoek Shiraz touch, while the terroir in our area, the foot of the Simonsberg near Stellenbosch, embraces this variety to the full extent,” adds Arno.

The Knorhoek Shiraz is a sublime food partner and pairs exceptionally well with venison, succulent rump steak and rich fish dishes. It will go perfectly with your Christmas roast!

This finely balanced Shiraz is available from R70 per bottle, directly at the cellar door or at leading wine outlets nationwide. For more information or wine orders contact Knorhoek Estate at Tel: 021 865 2114/5 or visit www.knorhoek.co.za.
