The 2011 Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Auction which exceeded all expectations with sales of almost R5,3 million, has achieved another remarkable feat with three Platter 5-star ratings amongst this year’s auction wines.

The Guild Platter 5-star wines crafted exclusively for the Guild Auction, featured in the 2012 Platter’s South African Wine Guide, the country’s definitive wine directory, are Flagstone Happy Hour 2009, Jordan Chardonnay Auction Reserve 2010 and Steenberg The Magus 2010. The previous 2009 vintage of Steenberg The Magus was also awarded 5-stars in the 2011 Platter’s South African Wine Guide.

Steenberg winemaker John Loubser’s philosophy behind The Magus was to create the best possible Sauvignon Blanc by sourcing grapes from more than one terroir. This wine is wild and pungent with dense upfront fruit on the palate, complemented by a powerful minerality and gun smoke with herbaceous notes.

Bruce Jack, winemaker of Flagstone Happy Hour 2010 believes that it is a happy wine, meant to add joy to your meal. Made of mostly Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon with a touch of Viognier, it was barrel fermented and aged for 10 months. He describes the wine as very concentrated and structured showing citrus, vygie, green pepper, orange and cinnamon/vanilla toasty oak on the palate.

The Jordan Chardonnay Auction Reserve 2010 is traditionally made using natural, wild yeast from the acclaimed Nine Yards Chardonnay vineyard. Intensely concentrated lemon-lime flavours and slow fermentation in 228 litre Burgundian oak barrels for twelve months resulted in a classic style with a New World twist.

“The full, rich mouthfeel and balanced oak integrates superbly with the tropical fruit finish,” is how winemaker Gary Jordan describes his wine.

The Cape Winemakers Guild comprises some of South Africa’s most respected winemakers with the single minded vision to elevate the standing of the South African wine industry amongst the world’s best through their ongoing dedication to the production of world-class, quality wines.
