The 2013 South African Guide-Dogs Association (SAGA) ‘Diamond Jubilee’ Ball, marking the 60th anniversary of the Association, was held this past Saturday 28th September at Montecasino. Regarded as one of the premier fundraising events on the South African social calendar, the annual Ball attracts everyone who’s anyone in Johannesburg to support the cause of ensuring that the visually impaired and physically disabled have access to trained and loving Guide and Service Dogs.
By the end of the evening, a total of R533 000 was raised for SA Guide-Dogs, breaking previous records and making the 2013 Ball the most successful to date. This amount included a number of dog sponsorships, puppy sponsorships and other donations and contributions from the auction. Montecasino pledged R175 000 to the cause, LCV Engineering pledged R80 0000 and Morag and Germano Cardoso pledged R60 000.
Organized by Edith Venter in association with Montecasino, the theme for the 2013 Ball was ‘Diamond Jubilee’, a theme reflected in the exquisite décor and flower arrangements sponsored by Gideon’s Flowers & Functions and further carried through in the stunning dress worn by event patron Ashley Hayden and the tie worn by MC Jason Greer. But it was the dogs who stole the limelight in the special doggie fashion show which saw a puppy, a Service Dog in training, a Guide Dog in training and a qualified Guide Dog all dressed up in their best evening attire. The use of a long cane was also demonstrated.
Adding additional sparkle to the event was blind 15-year old singer, Shenly, who entertained the crowd with her beautiful singing.
This was the seventh consecutive year that Montecasino, Gauteng’s premier entertainment destination, has hosted this event. The magic of Montecasino provided the perfect atmosphere for the night of glitz and glamour. Says Glenn Jospeh, General Manager of Montecasino, “We’re extremely proud to be the venue of choice for the SA Guide-Dogs Ball, and honoured to be a sponsor for a cause that has such a major impact on people’s lives. At Montecasino we’re all about entertainment, creating magical memories and making dreams come true – each and every guest is guaranteed an enjoyable experience each and every time they visit us – and guests to the ball were no exception. Our only hope is that the experience left them just as eager and committed to continue in their support of SA Guide-Dogs, as we are.”
“Thanks go out to Môreson Wines and SA Breweries who sponsored drinks for the evening, MJ Event Gear who provided the sound and lighting, and to our other generous sponsors Bob Martin, Esteé Lauder, MyFourways, Panorama Publishers, High St. Auctions, The Mellow Yellow Music Man Doug Ramage, Miss Earth SA, Swarovski and Crystal Forum, without whom the success of this event would not be possible,” says Pieter van Niekerk, marketing manager, SA Guide-Dogs Association for the Blind.
“The partnership of the Bob Martin brand with SAGA strategically merges a market leader in pet care with a valued and highly regarded Association. Bob Martin recognises the fundamental role that SAGA plays in the lives of the visually and physically impaired. We are delighted to be celebrating with the SA Guide-Dogs Diamond Jubilee, and pledge our support for many more years to come,” comments Justine Gatter, marketing manager, Martin and Martin.
“A very big thank you to everyone who showed their commitment on the night by means of sponsorships and donations, making dreams come true by providing visually or physically impaired people with the gift of independence, mobility and companionship. It truly was a night to remember,” concludes Pieter.
