SASKO celebrates a successful Kota Festival in Soweto

The 3rd annual Soweto Kota Festival took place on 7 and 8 September 2019, and SASKO, the experts in milling and baking, was there as the headline sponsor again.
When the festival was launched three years ago, just over 3000 people spent the weekend sampling the best kotas in Soweto. This year more than 16 550 people attended over the 2-day event - this excludes the vendors and staff working there.
Jackie Pillay, SASKO Senior Bread Brand Manager, says, “The Kota Festival exceeded our expectations this year in terms of attendance and the variety of kotas available to the public. There was a kota for every taste preference ranging from the authentic and well-known flavour combinations to more contemporary and on-trend toppings. In fact, avo was a firm favourite this year. I was fortunate enough to be one of the judges of the best kota on the Saturday. It was a delight and so exciting for me to chat to the vendors about the ingredients they had chosen for their signature kotas.”
SASKO is committed to assisting entrepreneurs and this year, the winners of the best kota received R45 000 in marketing support from SASKO. Kubs Chili took the number one spot on the podium with their signature kota. Close contenders Rocktown Deli and Zikipani took the 2nd and 3rd spot respectively.
The Festival was held at the Elkah Cricket Oval in Rockville for the first time this year. It proved to be the perfect venue for family and friends to come together and take advantage of the great weather while entertainers - along with SASKO Sam - kept everyone entertained.
Pillay continues, “We are a brand steeped in heritage, and bread is the base of most of our daily meals through to our traditional dishes – look at the kota, bunny chow and gatsby, the likes of bread and butter puddings, South African braai broodtjies with boerewors or the Sunday night toasted sandwich. The Kota Festival represents a celebration of our proud Mzansi culture and the traditions, of which food plays an integral part as it brings us all together.”
