Spice Route wines launches its most exotic wine yet, the Saffron Rosé

Inspired by the rich and bold flavours of the world’s most precious spice, Spice Route Wines is proud to launch its maiden rosé, the Saffron Rosé.
As the sun rises above fields of violet-blue flowers, specialised pickers begin the harvesting of the sought-after Saffron spice. One by one, each of the three ochre stigmas is pulled out of the delicate flower and dried by hand – a lengthy process that makes Saffron cost almost as much as gold. Much like this exotic hand-harvested spice, the grape selection for the Spice Route Wines Saffron Rosé is equally as rigorous. The low-yielding bush vines, which are grown in unique vineyards in Darling and the Piekenierskloof, ensure that only unblemished bunches undergo light pressing.
“The Saffron Rosé is made in a more complex style that will benefit from some ageing,” says Spice Route Wines winemaker, Charl du Plessis. The wine comprises of 100% Grenache and is gently sorted and pressed by hand to extract the pink colour. The individual components are fermented in an old 500-litre French oak barrel to ensure that each bottle contains only the highest quality of Spice Route Wines’ most celebrated variety, Grenache. After fermentation, the wine is kept in a barrel under a controlled temperature for nine months, with only 1 500 litres of this exclusive new wine having been produced this harvest.
Saffron Rosé presents itself beautifully in a rich burnt orange hue and comprises sensual aromas of dark berries and stewed fruits, savoury notes and flavours of blackberries, cinnamon spice and well-integrated oak. The combination of delicate aromas and bold flavours make it a masterful match when paired with almost any dish. We recommend rich meat dishes as well as lighter and creamier seafood fare.
Saffron Rosé recently came out on top at the National Wine Challenge Top 100 SA Wines of 2017 awards. The event took place on 25 April in Gardens, Cape Town, with the delicious rosé being presented with a Double Platinum award. It was also given the prestigious title of Grand Cru National Champion for being best in its class.
The Spice Route Saffron Rosé retails at R140 a bottle and is currently exclusively available at the Spice Route Tasting Room located at Spice Route Destination in Paarl.
