‘the beachhouse’ (Sauvignon Blanc Semillon), a wine by Douglas Green retailing at $10 has made quite a splash in the USA and is now South Africa’s biggest selling wine in that country.
Recent Nielsen results in for the 24 weeks ending 2 October 2011 place the beachhouse in the top spot as the Number One selling South African wine by SKU and Dollar sales in the Grocers, Food, Drug and Package Stores in the USA.
Also in the All Imported Category for Sauvignon Blanc wines from around the world for this same period, the beachhouse ranks at a very respectable 15th best seller in Dollar sales.
As South Africans revel at the height of the summer and take to the beaches for the festive season, the beachhouse wines are spreading sunny South African cheer to warm up the USA winter.
“This is a fantastic performance in only 7 months since the beachhouse hit the shelves,” says Greg Guy, DGB International Director. “Despite a cutthroat competitive global market, this result hints at the tremendous opportunity for South African wine with the right taste profile price and packaging.”
First launched to rave reviews in the local market, the beachhouse captures the perfectly relaxed spirit of the Cape winelands with typically ripe sunny fruit flavors invigorated by a perky natural acidity. The white blend combines the feisty flavors of Sauvignon Blanc with more demure tones of Semillon in a clever combination of freshness and comfort.
This surge in international sales driven largely by the USA and Canada has been reinforced by an increase in online activity through the brand website and social media platforms, with a burgeoning interactive ‘the beachhouse’ community.
“We are very positive that the inroads made by brands like the beachhouse proffer well for South African wine in this diverse and challenging market,” says Guy.
