Wine in South Africa: feedback report from BMi Research

BRAND ACTIVITY

Feb 18th, 10:06

The report gives insights on market trends for Natural Wine, Fortified Wine, Sparkling Wine, High-Priced Wine, Medium-Priced Wine and Standard-Priced Wine.

Wine report highlights

• The local wine industry has seen an erosion in volumes since 2009, where this is primarily due to a steady, recession-driven decline in exports.

• There has been some controversy regarding the export of wine. There is a growing percentage of bulk exports from South Africa and this has undermined governmental efforts at growing employment within the local wine industry.

• On the retail front, there has been an increasing trend amongst local market retailers in the sourcing of variants from small, exotic wineries in the Cape Winelands.

• Given the reduced growth in the full service restaurant industry in favour of quick service restaurant outlets,

• Overall, local wine production is expected to remain flat in the medium term.
