AB InBev aims to brew all of its Budweiser beers using 100% renewable electricity by 2025 as it unveils a new symbol on its packaging that indicates when the beer is made using green energy.

The symbol will appear on the label of every Budweiser brewed in the US beginning in spring 2018 – the first country where the beer will be brewed using 100% renewable electricity.

AB InBev said the label will then roll out to additional markets as they reach 100% renewable electricity in their Budweiser brewing operations.

The symbol was unveiled at an event at the World Economic Forum, as AB InBev invited other beverage companies to adopt it and celebrate renewable electricity use as a way to tackle climate change.

AB InBev chief sustainability officer Tony Milikin said: “To brew the perfect beer we need the highest quality natural ingredients. This is why we’re working to ensure a thriving, sustainable environment for the next 100 years and beyond.”

The company said that with 41 million Budweiser beers sold on average every day, switching to renewable electricity in its brewing operations “will correspond to taking 48,000 passenger cars off the road every year”.

Budweiser global vice president of marketing Brian Perkins added: “We know that climate change is an important issue for consumers, but they aren’t sure how their everyday actions can make a difference. The renewable electricity symbol can show consumers that their purchasing choices can have a positive impact.”
