New research has revealed the tremendous growth in active users on social networks in South Africa over the past year.

The 2013 SA Social Media Landscape report, conducted by World Wide Worx and Fuseware reveals that Twitter in South Africa grew as much as 129% between August 2012 and 2013.

Speaking at an event in Johannesburg on Tuesday, 10 September 2013, Arthur Goldstuck, MD of World Wide Worx said that South Africans post 54 million tweets per month, 85% of which are from mobile devices.

Facebook’s growth in South Africa during the last 12 months was also the highest yet, according to Goldstuck, at 9.4 million users, with 87% of South Africans accessing Facebook from mobiles.

This was up from 6,8-million users a year ago.

Mxit, the previous market leader, was at 7.4-million users. This figure is up from 6.95 million users recorded in August 2012 using a 30-day metric.

At the end of 2012, Mxit shifted its stat reporting from the number of active users over a 90-day period to a more industry-standard 30-day period.

World Wide Worx noted that Mxit was also starting to feel the effects of competing instant messaging services like WhatsApp and 2Go, as well as from the growth of social networking on phones.

South African Instagram users hit 680,000, the analyst said.

Meanwhile, business network LinkedIn grew from 1.9 million users, in August 2012, to 2.7 million in 2013, Goldstuck said.

Google+ users remained flat, with only 466 000 active users – only marginally higher than a year ago.

According to Goldstuck, both social networking and instant messaging apps are dominant in downloads for smartphones and tablets, with WhatsApp presently the most popular app in the Android, Apple and Windows app stores.2013 Copyright, BusinessTech. All right reserved
