South Africa retail chain to open first outlet in Kenya soon

Game Africa, a South African retail chain, is set to open its first outlet in Kenya, intensifying competition in the retail sector.
The outlet will be located within Garden City Mall, along the Thika Superhighway where local supermarket Nakumatt will also be setting up shop.
“Nakumatt joins South African retail giant Game as the mall’s second major anchor tenant,” reads a statement from the private equity firm behind the mall, Actis.
Game Africa is a fully-owned subsidiary of Massmart Holdings, which last year booked space in the Thika Road mall. But it had remained unclear which of MassMart’s five retail brands would occupy the Garden City space.
There has been a rush among retailers in Kenya to open mega stores along the newly completed Thika superhighway in a bid to take advantage of mushrooming residential properties catering to the middle class.
Garden City’s leasing agent, Knight Frank, is currently in talks with other South African retail groups in a bid to fill up vacant space within the Sh12.7 billion property. The entry of the Massmart brand in Kenya marks the first foray into the local retail market by international firms.
Massmart is 51 per cent owned by American retail giant, Walmart. Over the past two years, Massmart has been expanding the Game Africa brand on the continent with the aim of doubling its footprint by 2016.
