HP: adding flexible innovation to POS


As POS becomes the heart of technology in-store, interlinking more closely with digital marketing and the overall shopping experience, it has to readily adapt to a retailer’s demands and changing environment.

A core innovator in POS technology, HP has developed a number of key solutions, including the all-in-one ap5000 POS System and the modular rp5800 Retail Solution.

Its latest offering, the all-in-one RP7, answers the call from retailers for a system that can be customised to meet their specific needs throughout the store, offering one POS system with many applications.

The compact all-in-one RP7 employs touch screen technology for ease of use and can easily adapt to a retailer’s needs, by converting into a customer facing display or being used to provide more information about products, for example. Not to mention, having the ability to link to HP’s various digital signage offerings.

South African retailers have already shown interest and invested in HP’s POS systems, including grocery and apparel retailers.

HP remains focused on three areas of retail development: POS, digital signage and the HP slate, a tablet computer customised for retail. It also plans to explore self-checkout technology.

The HP Slate is a portable tablet computer and has a variety of uses. It can extend the POS process; here a sales associate can check out shoppers’ groceries from the tablet. It can also act as an assistant shopping function by providing shoppers with additional information about products.

Having product information available to consumers at their fingertips provides a value added service to consumers, according to Gwen Coble, Product Manager for Retail Solutions, HP Printing & Personal Systems (PPS) Group Europe, Middle East and Africa region (EMEA).

HP’s dedicated teams in South Africa and abroad will continue to create awareness about its products, growing the brand from strength to strength as it develops technology to suit a retailer’s every need.

US Study: Self-checkout is here to stay
It's true that some retailers, including Big Y and Albertson's, have recently scaled back self-checkout, but they're in the minority, according to a study published this week by RBR, which found that 2011 shipments of self-checkout terminals grew to a high of 26,700 — seven times the number shipped a decade earlier. The London-based research firm also forcasts that by 2017 annual shipment numbers will be approaching 60,000.
