Update: product recall & traceability In South Africa

Compiled by SANBWA, The South African National Bottled Water Association

‘Everyone within the food supply chain is accountable and must ensure a quick and effective product recall can be conducted to minimise risks and costs. Everyone – from the raw material and ingredient supplier to the packaging supplier, the equipment supplier, the manufacturer/ producer, the distributor, the importer, the retailer, the wholesaler and the consumer.’

This was the message from the Consumer Goods Council of South Africa’s head of Food Safety Initiative, Ronél Burger, to delegates at the South African National Bottled Water Association (SANBWA) conference held in Midrand earlier this year.

In South Africa, bottled water is regarded as a food product, and was previously regulated according to the general safety and quality criteria governing the production of food. With its inception in 1997, SANBWA lobbied the Department of Health to draft legislation specifically governing bottled water. Today, bottled water is a food product category of its own, and is regulated by the Department of Health as such.

Version 4.0 of SANBWA’s Bottled Water Standard, currently in draft form, will require members to have adequate recall and traceability procedures in place. Members therefore welcomed the opportunity to hear about considerations for food safety from experts in the field at the conference.

According to Burger, food safety is concerned with the ability to produce and supply food – and because of South African regulations, bottled water – that will not harm consumers or pose a risk/potential risk.
