INTRODUCTION

Cambridge services the needs of low-income customers in the Living Standard Measurement (LSM) categories
of 2 to 7 by offering a pleasant shopping environment.

High quality service departments and bulk displays of a culturally appropriate choice of fresh foods are key to the Cambridge offering. A wide range of fresh produce and fresh meat are available special attention is paid to stocking less expensive cuts of meat.

STRATEGY

Our retail offering made good progress bolstered by the decision to bring all retail stores under the Cambridge brand. The contemporary design appeals to our customers and was first rolled out to all new stores and then to older stores. The refurbishment programme is now 60% complete. This includes JDs and Savemore with rebranding of all remaining stores scheduled to be completed during the next financial year. The retail division plans to open a dedicated dry grocery distribution centre in Gauteng which will service the Cambridge stores in the region while a central meat processing plant will be opened in KwaZulu-Natal. Both facilities will improve operating efficiencies as well as ensure a more consistent level of quality and stock availability in our stores.

HISTORY

On the retail side, the three-store Thaba Cash & Carry was acquired in 2007 as part of our strategy of developing a model to serve wholesale and retail customers in the same store. Cambridge Food, was acquired in 2008 and now boasts 26 stores, while Top Spot and two Sunshine stores were acquired in July 2009. Service departments, made up of an on-site bakery, butchery and fresh fruit and vegetable offering, is an important component of this retail offering.

We are in the process of consolidating all 20 of our retail outlets under the Cambridge brand.
