August 2016. South African’s will have an opportunity to vote for the country’s best Boerewors when the Top 3 recipes from this year’s Championship Boerewors competition become available in all Shoprite and Checkers stores nationwide, between 19 August - 9 September 2016.

A country-wide search to find South Africa’s best Boerewors began in May this year, with hundreds of hopefuls entering their special recipes for consideration. Through various judging rounds, the number of contestants was whittled down to just three finalists, who will now go on to the Championship Boerewors Competition finale in Cape, on Thursday 15 September 2016.

Customers will be able to buy a combo pack containing all three recipes, braai it, and vote for their favourite recipe by dialling the USSD code clearly marked on each combo pack.

The Boerewors recipes of Jacobus Olivier Kritzinger, Winter Reaobaka Letlhogile and Vukile Vincent Cele impressed the panel of judges from the South African Chef’s Association throughout the competition, and they will now compete for the votes of ordinary South African’s in the lead up to the Championship Boerewors competition finale.

From Joubertina in the Eastern Cape, 63-year-old Kritzinger’s passion for making Boerewors has helped him to help others over the years. Having managed an old age home for almost 20 years, he was motivated to open a butchery to support the home when he learnt that it was in serious debt. Through his winning Boerewors recipe sold at the butchery, he helped the home pay off the debt within two years and continues to care for the elderly to this day.

Top 3 Championship Boerewors finalist Winter Reaobaka Letlhogile believes that his three rules for making the perfect Boerewors will ensure him the Championship title.“Spices must be soak in iced water, the boerewors maker must be cleaned and all meat used must be free from sinew.” Letlhogile says that braaing is ‘in his blood’ and that winning the competition would be validation for six years’ worth of preparation to perfect the ultimate Boerewors recipe.

Durban finalist Vukile Vincent Cele has also used his background as a butcher to develop his winning Boerewors recipe, focussing on texture, taste and using only the best quality meat to create a truly traditional South African boerewors which the judges loved. “I braai at least once a month and I would say that I have become an expert behind the grill!”

The Top 3 finalists are all vying for the bragging rights as SA’s No.1 Boerewors Champion as well as a chance to win a brand new Toyota Hilux 2.8 GD-6 Double Cab Raised Body Raider.

More details on the Championship Boerewors competition final round will be shared on the website at: http://www.championshipboerewors.co.za/Pages/default.aspxv
