Clover Mama Afrika, Clover’s CSI project, recently held a dressmaking course with Linda Venter from Bernina, one of their loyal partners, which hosted seven of the mamas from the project.
The objective of this intense training session was for each Mama to use their creative sewing talent and sew an evening dress using chiffon and Shwe-Shwe fabric. They received an example of what their dress could look like and pattern that could be modified. The results were impressive, and the Mamas even made their own complimentary jewellery to go with their fabulous evening dress.
“These dresses will be revealed at the *Smarties Week awards evening in January 2019. There are still another two groups to complete this course so that each Clover Mama Afrika will have a unique evening dress for their awards evening next year. It is wonderful to see their will to create their own style, these Mamas never cease to amaze me,” explains Prof Elain Vlok, Founder of Clover Mama Afrika.
Over and above the training sessions such as the dressmaking course, these Mamas are all supplied with the necessary tools, equipment, and infrastructure to create an income for themselves in order for them to give back to their communities.
*Smarties Week is a hands-on training course that sees the Clover Mama Afrika ladies travel from different provinces across the country and unite to partake in a week of value-added workshops. The week culminates in an award ceremony which sees those who have blossomed throughout the year being rewarded for their personal and economic growth, as well as their impact to their community.
