Jonathan Dong, Wal-Mart China's director of public relations, said Shenzhen-based Yue Wing Cheong Light Products and Hong Kong-listed Mainland Headwear Holdings Ltd were classified as "orange alert" vendors, part of an internal colour code system used by Wal-Mart for suppliers whose labour practices raise concerns.

Global Consumer Confidence Down In First Half Of 2007 - Nielsen
Global consumer confidence fell two Index points from 99 to 97 over the last six months, according to the twice-yearly 47-country Nielsen Global Consumer Confidence Index. India and Norway topped the Nielsen Global Consumer Confidence Index at 135 and 132 points respectively, while Portugal and Korea languished once again at the bottom of the Index as the world’s pessimists. South Africa remains near the middle but unfortunately adheres to the world’s downward trend, dropping 4 points from 99 in October 2006, to 94 in May 2007.
CARREFOUR hypermarket expansion in Saudi Arabia
Carrefour has announced plans for four new hypermarkets in Saudi Arabia over the next year. According to Carrefour vice president Abdullah Ahmed, stores are planned for Jeddah, Taif, Riyadh and Madina.

WALGREENS FY results
US drugstore chain Walgreens has reported that total sales for fiscal 2007, which ended August 31, stood at USD53,758 million up 13.4% from USD47,409 million. Comparable store sales for fiscal 2007 increased 8.1% while front-end comparable drugstore sales rose 5.8%. Prescription sales, which accounted for 65.0% of total sales in fiscal 2007, climbed 14.7% for the year.

TENGELMANN´s food banners continue to suffer as non-food divisions boom; no news on Plus sale
In Germany, family-owned international retail group Tengelmann has released the results of its 2006/07 financial year this morning, with CEO Karl-Erivan Haub saying that group sales totalled EUR24.52 (USD30.7 billion), corresponding to a 3.2% increase when excluding currency effects. Sales in Europe rose by 4.9%, reaching EUR19.24 billion (USD24.1 billion), while sales in the US fell by 2.6% to EUR5.29 billion (USD6.6 billion), partly due to the sale of the Canadian operations in 2005. At the end of the financial year, Tengelmann operated in a total of 14 European countries, as well as the US.
WAL-MART sees benefits from RFID
Speaking at a recent trade show, RFID strategy leader at Wal-Mart, Ron Moser, said that the retailer could increase sales by USD287 million by fixing just a small portion of its inventory problems using RFID technology, and that could be just the start. Currently, around 2% of all lost sales are due to the simple fact a store has run out of an item, but 41% of lost sales are due to inventory problems, according to Mr Moser.
CARREFOUR third quarter sales rise fuelled by acquistions
Carrefour has reported that third quarter sales increased 5.8%, fuelled by acquisitions this year in Brazil and Poland. Revenue rose to EUR23.11 billion (USD32.8 billion) from a restated EUR21.82 billion (USD27.38 billion) a year earlier. CEO Jose Luis Duran added stores outside France and cut prices at home to match discounts by competitors such as E.Leclerc. The acquisition of Atacadao in Brazil and the purchase of Ahold in Poland have helped Carrefour tap faster-growing markets.

Sainsbury goes 'greener' and 'fairer'
According to reports in the UK marketing press, Sainsbury is converting key lines of its TU clothing private label to 100% Fairtrade cotton. CARREFOUR Spain nine months sales rise
Carrefour’s Spanish division has reported a 4.7% rise in sales for the first nine months of the year to EUR10.359 billion (USD14.1 billion). The supermarket chain Carrefour Express reported the fastest growth, with a 15.7% rise to EUR509 million (USD682.9 million). The group’s hypermarket operation recorded a 4.8% rise in sales to EUR6.785 billion (USD9.1 billion), whilst its discount chain Dia recorded a 2.8% rise to EUR2.349 billion (USD3.2 billion).
CARREFOUR switches to cross docking
As part of a larger re-structuring scheme, Carrefour is moving its logistics system towards cross docking in order to reduce stocks, with all of its French distribution centres currently converted to the new concept in a scheme that will stretch out into 2009 or 2010.

SAINSBURY gives away energy saving light bulbs
To mark Energy Saving Week in the UK, Sainsbury has announced plans to give away one million energy saving light bulbs - the number it normally sells in a year. The bulbs will be handed out on Saturday in return for pledges from customers to try to save energy. Sainsbury's said the aim was to encourage customers and staff to switch on to greener alternatives during darker months.
