Golden glory for Eikendal at Decanter World Wine Awards 2008

Eikendal, the prominent barrel-vaulted cellar on the foot of the Helderberg Mountains in the Cape Winelands, has excelled at the prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards 2008 in the UK, clinching one of only four gold medals awarded to a South African Sauvignon blanc.

The golden glory for Eikendal Sauvignon Blanc 2007 was one of four medals awarded to the estate at this year’s competition, setting a personal best performance for Eikendal in this annual international contest.

In 2006, Eikendal walked away with the Trophy for the best South African Chardonnay in this competition for the wooded Eikendal Chardonnay 2004.

Eikendal Sauvignon Blanc 2007 has a crisp, greener taste appeal than its more tropical predecessors, showing exceptional fruit layers and lower sugars than in previous years.

Bursting with fresh intensity, this easy drinking wine is a combination of grapes from the cooler West Coast region and the Sauvignon blanc from Eikendal’s own prized vineyards.

Blending the fruit of these two diverse terroirs – both well suited to Sauvignon blanc – imparted a revitalising spectrum of flavour and ripeness to the wine, ranging from the green and grassy nuances to the luscious, more voluptuous floral tastes which dominated its former vintages.

“The proximity of the Atlantic Ocean, creating cooler pockets in the vineyards near Vredendal ensures slower ripening, resulting a natural acidity balance and terrific green flavours in the berries. The introduction of the typical coastal, minerality and a flinty character, literally elevated the wine to greener pastures!” explains Eikendal winemaker Henry Kotzé.

Eikendal Sauvignon Blanc 2007 is a lively and tangy dry white, with the sun-kissed flavours of ripe gooseberry, fig and papaya perked up with slivers of lemon grass and green pepper on the palate, lingering with a good, firm finish.

The other Eikendal medals at the 2008 Decanter World Wine Awards are silver for the cellar’s first wine released in 2008, a silky rich Semillon 2007 named Cleopatra’s Wedding Present, and bronze medals for the flagship Bordeaux blend Eikendal Classique 2005 and Eikendal Cabernet Franc 2005.

Eikendal Sauvignon Blanc 2007 is available from R40 per bottle at leading supermarkets and wine outlets countrywide or directly from the cellar.

The 2008 vintage is due for release in July 2008.
