Target steps up water reduction efforts

Target has created a plan that will help the company better manage its water usage. 

Through a partnership with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Target launched an internal freshwater stewardship. Building on the company’s existing water management aspirations, the program uses the WWF’s water risk assessment as a baseline to evaluate and address how the company can further improve water quality, optimise water efficiency and increase access to clean water.

The framework is being applied to the company’s water reduction efforts across its manufacturing supply chain, stores and distribution facilities. This includes hitting milestones, such as a 15% water reduction in stores, distortion centers and headquarters by 2025; and having all building operations on board with the company’s stance on water quality within 24 months, according to “A Bullseye View” blog on Target’s website.

Overall, the framework is helping the company develop a holistic approach that acknowledges water as part of a bigger global system.

“With operations in nearly 50 countries, Target shares the responsibility of tackling environmental issues in the communities where we do business,” said John Mulligan, executive VP, and COO. “Our freshwater approach is one way we’re putting the needs of people, communities and the planet at the heart of how we work today, to help build a better tomorrow."
