SA retailers get in on the action

South African retailers cashed in on American culture this week when they kicked off festive season sales with Black Friday.
Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving in the US when retailers offer massively discounted merchandise. The phenomenon has spread throughout the world.
Crazy sales were introduced at Shoprite Group's Checkers for the first time on Friday, while DionWired ran the promotion for the second time.
Checkers is the first food retailer to cut prices by up to 50% on a range of selected general merchandise, food, and liquor items. Marketing director Neil Schreuder said it seemed as if sales volumes were about to equal the group's biggest trading day of the year — Christmas Eve.
Kalahari.com experienced its biggest traffic "ever", said marketing manager Liz Hillock. The biggest discounts were on smartphones, laptops, and iPads. Thanks to the overwhelming response, Kalahari.com has extended the 40%-70% discounts until midnight tonight.
Schreuder said the Checkers Black Friday promotion was exciting for customers, and that the multimillion-rand price cuts would be a welcome gift for consumers in trying times.
"We pulled out all stops to ensure consumers will get unprecedented deals," he said.
Telkom also participated in Black Friday for the first time this year, and offered a free Xbox One and DStv Explora for an upgrade to SmartHome Premium or Supreme, and 5-gigabyte free data on all new mobile contracts applied for on Friday. Other retailers cashing in include Hi-Fi Corp, Bid or Buy and Takealot.co.za.From DFM Publishers (Pty) Ltd
