The ultra-modern Madiba Shopping Mall which is being built on an acre of land will have two basement floors, five upper floors and a rooftop with a swimming pool.

Trade Secretary Phyllis Kandie in a speech read by PS Ibrahim Mohammed said Kinyanjui has set the ball rolling on a major addition to the retail footprint in Kenya.

“The kind of establishment we are setting up here is not just an ordinary mall. In today’s economy the ultra-modern mall is a rich and vibrant ecosystem that combines not just retail at its center but also an impressive list of lifestyle enterprises and an enormous array of service providers,” she said.

Kandie said the only way counties can make the impact needed is by encouraging entrepreneurs and investment.

“The idea was and remains to create a platform for creating wealth that is closer to the people. County governments do not create wealth, they help businesses, investors and entrepreneurs to do so and this trickles down to the people of the county through employment and a better life,” she said.

Nyeri Deputy Governor Samuel Wamathai said: “This is an ambitious project and this is how it should be. Investment is about ambition and vision and the Madiba mall, from what I can gather, is a well thought out and exemplary undertaking."

He said the county government will give incentives and concessions to such investors and guarantee them a handsome return on their investment.

Madiba mall will have restaurants, a hotel, banks, beauty parlors, tour companies, dry cleaners, fashion stores and a bakery . Uchumi Supermarkets will be the first tenant of the mall which will be finished in 18 months.

The mall will create employment for more than 1,000 people directly and more than 3,000 indirectly.

MPs present at the launch included Esther Murugi (Nyeri Town), Mary Wambui (Othaya), Peter Weru (Mathira), Kanini Kega (Kieni), Tirus Ngahu (Kangema) and Nyeri women's representative Priscilla Nyokabi.
