Nambia Breweries Ltd (NBL) celebrated Reinheitsgebot Day in style in April by launching its RHG campaign and opening the first barrel of Urbock, the brewer’s winter beer.

NBL has been brewing according to the Reinheitsgebot for the past 90 years. While preserving this age old tradition, NBL also confirmed its role as an innovation business which strived to meet the needs of its consumers. Rosemary Shipiki, NBL’s marketing manager, said.

“While young adults have immense appreciation for quality which is evident in their purchasing decisions, the word Reinheitsgebot is not easily pronounceable for some, and therefore we launched an innovative campaign called RHG.

“RHG, which stands for Reinheitsgebot, caused great waves in the music industry with the compilation of a song Quality by a specially formulated band called RHG, which was brought to life especially for this purpose,”

Shipiki said. The song highlights what the Reinheitsgebot is all about and what it stands for, taking it from a symbol on beer bottles to an aspirational brand. The song and RHG is all about living the life of quality also when it comes to choosing a beer and enjoying it responsibly, Shipiki said.

At the same occasion, Namibia’s winter season beer, Urbock, was launched. Urbock is also brewed according to the Reinheitsgebot using only barley, hops and water. It is only brewed once a year and instead of using normal malted barley, roasted malted barley is used which gives the beer its unique dark flavour and look.

The brewing process is about seven weeks instead of the usual four weeks, giving it a seven per cent alcohol content.

This year Urbock will be exported to Angola for the first time. As usual, it will also be available in South Africa and on local shelves.
