Making South Africa a great place for retailers

Making South Africa a great place for retailers

The Consumer Goods Council of South Africa has embarked on a process that will see it transition into an effective organisation that has the skills, network and authority to act on behalf of the industry. The council has always had an impressive array of names on the board of directors, but without a strong management infrastructure to implement and drive the strategies developed by the board.

The management team at the CGCSA has gone through some changes and under its new CEO, Gwarega Mangozhe, there is a distinct energy and enthusiasm that is sure to result in a progressive industry body.

The recent CGCSA conference held in Johannesburg laid an impressive platform on which much can be built for future events. Retailing is an enormous industry where change is incremental rather than revolutionary. For this reason it is particularly interesting to hear from and speak to leaders who are at the forefront of change and innovation.

I would sincerely encourage participation in the 2013 event for anyone looking to make an impact on the industry.

Retail is a significant contributor to any economy. In an emerging economy formal retail drives development and growth and South Africa we need an environment that is conducive to retail growth. A strong, well-lead and well-supported CGCSA will be in a position to contribute towards making South Africa a great place for retailers.

I look forward to watching the progress made by the new CGCSA team and wish them the best of luck in their endeavours.

Craig Ballantyne
