What is the correct approach to private labels?

Private label is a topic that is debated at all levels of retail. While opinions are often polar, there is no denying that all retailers “do private label”, but only a few retailers “do private label well”. The more I see and learn about private labels, the more I understand that there is no real right or wrong approach to making a success of a retailer’s own brand offering.

Aldi, for instance are aggressive discounters on private label and keep only a limited product range in store. They only stock brands in categories where it’s absolutely necessary and always strive to provide superior products at much reduced prices. In doing this they have helped to shape the most competitive grocery retail environments in the world. All this, while keeping only a limited range of product.
