Issued on behalf of Woolworths Trust

Formed in 2003 to streamline Woolworths community development and charity activities, the Woolworths Trust is celebrating its 10th birthday this year by enabling and encouraging Woolworths employees to make a difference in the communities in which they work and live.

As part of a bigger 10th birthday roll-out, employees from the Woolworths head office in Cape Town volunteered their time over the last couple of months to support the organisation Newkidz on the Block in the upgrade of ten children’s centres, including children’s homes, early childhood development centres and a soup kitchen.

The Woolworths Trust with the help of more than 500 head office employees, implemented makeovers at:

• Carol’s Day Care Centre – Mitchell’s Plain
• Free to Grow Educare – Kuilsriver
• Hands of Compassion – Retreat
• Heatherdale Children’s Home – Athlone
• Khulangolwazi Educare – Khayelitsha
• Khuti’s Homecare and Development – Khayelitsha
• Nokhwezi Educare – Mfuleni
• SOS Children’s Village – Thornton
• Zanethemba Kidz Haven - Philippi
• Place of Blessing – Gugulethu

Over the last ten years the Woolworths Trust has donated R34 million to programmes that improve food security, reduce child vulnerability and uplift education. This year they have allocated an additional R1 million over and above their existing contributions to a variety of initiatives, including specific activities that depend on employee-participation such as making over ten children’s centres, as well as supporting ten additional charities on Mandela Day, giving ten schools access to more books and helping ten EduPlant schools to grow food gardens.
