FMCG update: competition for turf

Local food manufacturers will soon be challenged by two international FMCG players, namely Diplomat and Iffco. Iffco is a food manufacturer and distributor based in Dubai and has a presence in more than 85 countries. Diplomat is one of Israel’s largest FMCG distributors and has made its way into South Africa under an agreement with Proctor and Gamble (P&G). Both contenders have great financial and international influence and timed their entry well with the arrival of Walmart. Pioneer Foods has embarked on an aggressive attack on the local biscuit market; in an effort to achieve a 10% market hold on this sector, it will discontinue the Kwalilty Biscuit brand it bought in 2004 and introduce a wider selection from the middle of next year. AVI already controls a large portion of this sector (+-70%) and will have to defend its position as it comes under fire from new entrants. Iffco is set to shake up the industry even more with the launch of Tiffany, its imported biscuit and confectionery range. When considering that the South African biscuit market has annual sales of around R3 billion, we’re in for a biscuit war that’s going to make the kitchen a little crowded.

Shoprite, which runs discount stores of the same name and the more upscale chain Checkers, said on Tuesday diluted headline earnings per share totalled 507.6c in the year to end June from 451.6c a year earlier

Pick n Pay ready to take on Wal-Mart
Despite being in favour of Wal-Mart entering the South African retail market, Pick n Pay chairman Gareth Ackerman indicated that his company was ready to take the giant US retailer head on and beat them. Speaking at the Cape Town Press Club on Wednesday, Ackerman said Wal-Mart would force South African companies to become more globally competitive and its entry would mean a fundamental change to Pick n Pay's business operations.

Food prices may push up SA inflation
A median of 16 economists polled by Reuters is for South African consumer inflation to quicken to 5.2% year-on-year (y/y) in July from 5% in June. The month-on-month consumer price index (CPI) is seen quickening to 0.8% in July from 0.4% in June.

Target Second-Quarter Profit Beats Estimates on Higher Sales, Lower Costs
Target Corp, the second-largest U.S. discount retailer, posted a 3.7 percent gain in second- quarter profit that surpassed analysts’ estimates, driven by higher sales and reduced costs. Net income rose to $704 million, or $1.03 a share, from $679 million, or 92 cents, a year earlier, the Minneapolis-based company said today in a statement.
